Sun, Nov 4: Arrive at Santiago International Airport, and transfer to the nearby Pacific Coast to visit the coastal town of colorful Valparaiso. Be amazed by the colorful port city of Valparaiso, famous for its stacked hills and winding stairs with incredible street art! This UNESCO World Heritage city takes you back in time, yet has a modern, forward-looking feel. Enjoy incredible views of the bay and see all the important places such as Plaza de la Victoria, the famous Turri Clock and the Naval Academy – but the highlight of this tour is visiting La Sebastiana Museum, the once “hideout” of Chile's most adored poet, Pablo Neruda. Relive this Nobel Prize winner’s life, surrounded by art, collectibles, history, memories and nostalgia. Then, admire some of Vina del Mar’s famous beaches, the flower clock, and elite summer homes as you wind along the coastal highway to your beautiful hotel, the Sheraton Miramar in Vina del Mar. Mon, Nov 5: Today following breakfast, head out to La Campana National Park. This wonderful place is labeled by the UNESCO as a “Biosphere Reserve,” with the objective of protecting the unique ecosystem which includes an abundant amount of native flora and fauna. The park aims to preserve the Chilean palm (Jubaea Chilensis), which is the most austral palm of the world, but in danger of extinction due to the production and the extraction of the honey, that started in the colonial era. Those who wish to do so will take a guided trek on the “Sendero La Cascada” Trail to a lookout where you can appreciate a stunning waterfall. Afterward, share a delicious glass of Chilean wine and cheese before heading back to the hotel. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free. (B)
Tue, Nov 6: After breakfast, wave goodbye to Vina del Mar and journey through one of Chile's most important wine-producing areas, the Casablanca Valley. En route, stop at one of the most beautiful vineyards, Matetic. The climate, soil and light in this part of the country produce high quality wines—which you will get to “taste” for yourself! Learn their unique take on wine-making, focusing on organic and bio-dynamic processes. After the tour, enjoy a lovely lunch at the vineyard before continuing to Santiago. Check in to the Ritz Carlton in Santiago and enjoy a free evening. (B,L)
Wed, Nov 7: Fly from Santiago to Punta Arenas this morning. Upon arrival, transfer to Tierra Patagonia, perched on a bluff on the edge of Chile’s Lake Sarmiento. With enormous windows everywhere, the lakes and peaks of Torres del Paine National Park are a constant and awe-inspiring backdrop. Exploring the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site just outside the front door is a priority here, as is finding the space and serenity to relax and enjoy your surroundings. Thu, Nov 8: Enjoy the full day program at Tierra Patagonia. Native wildlife such as guanaco and nandu mingle with the ranch's free-roaming horses and sheep. Along with a variety of initiatives to support and preserve local habitats and cultures, the lodge is supporting a reforestation campaign that seeks to plant 1,000,000 trees in Chilean Patagonia. Fri, Nov 9: Adventure awaits with another full day at Tierra Patagonia doing as you wish. Visit skilled Chilean cowboys (huasos) on their ranches, explore the surrounding grassland or spend the day hiking to spectacular mountain vistas. Then return for a swim or a massage in the spa. (B,L,D)
Sat, Nov 10: Embark on a scenic overland journey by private vehicle from Tierra Patagonia across the border into Argentina. Continue to El Calafate and check in to your hotel, Kosten Aike. The hotel takes its name from the words Kosten (wind) and Aike (place), but its name is not the only thing that comes from the Tehuelche people; all the bedspreads, curtains, covers, ironwork and paintings were specially created by outstanding Argentine artists who recreated the ancestral designs of the Tehuelches, widely known for their perfect geometry and high appreciation for nature. The balance of the day is free to get acquainted with shops and restaurants in El Calafate, your gateway to the glaciers. (B)
Sun, Nov 11: Today’s roster of excitement encompasses Los Glaciares National Park (home of Seno Mayo of Argentino Lake and Perito Moreno Glacier, just to drop a few names). Take an interpretive, guided walk in the Andean Patagonian forest, appreciating a variety of cinnamon trees, lengas, nires and even a centenarian cherry tree whose trunk is bigger than three meters in diameter. View limestone rock formations, 180 meters tall per 100 meters wide. Once the surrounding landscape has been admired, navigate Seno Mayo’s lake for a show of grand glacial mass! Navigate Perito Moreno Glacier’s Northern wall and disembark at the floating pier at the foot of the catwalks. The different balconies can be visited to have varied panoramic views of Perito Moreno Glacier’s face. Return to El Calafate for the evening. (B,L)
