Mon, Oct 29: Fly to Jacksonville, Florida. Transfer to Jekyll Island, Georgia and check in to the Jekyll Island Club Resort, located on the Intracoastal Waterway side of the island. In 1886, 53 prominent American tycoons founded the Jekyll Island Club and the clubhouse officially opened its doors in January 1888, quickly becoming a retreat for families that represented one sixth of the world's wealth. Today, after extensive renovations of the club district and clubhouse, the Jekyll Island Club Resort is more than a cherished vacation destination – it’s a living historic site. Enjoy a Welcome Dinner at hotel this evening. (Meal: Dinner)
Tue, Oct 30: Following breakfast at the hotel, learn about the island's rich history with a guided tram tour through the 240 acre National Historic Landmark District and visit two restored cottages. Visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to learn about the rehabilitation and research of this protected species. Explore the exhibit gallery and venture into the hospital to meet some of the patients. The remainder of the day is at leisure. (B)
Wed, Oct 31: Today is free to enjoy more of the island on your own. Walk along historic tabby sidewalks shaded by old plantation oaks, play a game of croquet on the resort’s manicured lawn, relax on a picturesque porch or wander the beaches in search of san dollars and driftwood. Rent a bicycle and peddle your way along 20 miles of paved bike paths, winding through forests, beaches, riverfront, and the historic district. Lounge by the heated outdoor pool along the river’s edge or take the resort’s complimentary transportation to Jekyll Ocean Club with access to another pool, the beach and Beach Village. The island is also home to three 18-hole golf courses and a 9-hole par-3 course. This evening, take a sunset cruise to observe bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. The waters around Jekyll are home to one of the world’s largest populations of these creatures. Cruise along the Intracoastal Waterway, salt marshes and wilderness beaches while you learn about the dolphin’s social behavior and feeding habits. Keep your eyes open for sea turtles, manatees, egrets, herons, roseate spoonbills, and osprey, too. (B)
Thu, Nov 1: Enjoy breakfast and a leisurely morning at the resort before transferring to Jacksonville to fly home. (B)
